Intramural League

About the Program

Whatcom County Amateur Hockey Association is excited to introduce a reshaped youth hockey program designed to replace our traditional Learn to Play (LTP) model. Our new Intramural League aligns with USA Hockey’s American Development Model (ADM), focusing on age-appropriate, skill-based development in a fun and engaging environment.

Players will be grouped into two divisions based on skill level:

  • Proficient Division (typically U9, birth years 2017–2018)

  • Development Division (typically U7, birth years 2019–2020)

Our approach promotes small-area games, station-based practices, and maximum puck touches — all essential for long-term player growth and enjoyment.

FAQ

How are players placed in the Proficient or Development division?
During September and October, players will participate in practice-only sessions that include informal evaluations. These evaluations help determine whether a player is better suited for the Proficient or Development division.

Will my child team be eligible for tournaments?

Yes! Each team will have their own official USA Hockey roster, and may enter tournaments if they wish.

Will my child receive a jersey?

Yes! Players will receive one jersey and one pair of socks, which they will have to turn in at the end of the year. Fan jerseys and jerseys to keep will be available to purchase.

Can players move between divisions during the season?
While initial placement happens during the evaluation period, flexibility will be maintained. Players may be moved if it’s in the best interest of their development.

Will there be opportunities for parents to get involved?
Yes! With more teams, we’ll need more parent coaches and volunteers. This is a fantastic opportunity to support your child’s team and strengthen our hockey community through coaching, managing, and scorekeeping roles.

What should brand-new players do?
We recommend new players start with the Sportsplex Learn to Play (LTP) program. It’s a fun, beginner-friendly way to build basic skating and hockey skills before joining a team in the intramural league.

Is there a chance this model could change?
Yes. If enrollment numbers are high enough, WCAHA may split the divisions into separate U7 and U9 leagues. We’re aiming for around 32 players per division. A final decision will be made by the end of October so families know what to expect before games begin.

How do I stay updated or register?
Keep an eye on our website and social media for registration announcements, evaluation schedules, and team updates. You can also reach out to WCAHA directly with any questions.
